COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Skin diseases are quite prevalent in the community and a large number of patients attending to any hospital OPD come with the complaints related to skin diseases. Most skin diseases can be easily diagnosed and managed with adequate amount of training. We have designed a comprehensive training syllabus for undergraduates in Dermatology, which includes the Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy. The aim of the training is to train the candidates to diagnose and manage common skin diseases.

OBJECTIVES:

Knowledge

At the end of the training a candidate should be able to

1. Diagnose and manage common skin diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy.

2. To diagnose and manage common medical emergencies related to skin diseases, leprosy and sexually transmitted diseases.

3. To familiarize them with the common laboratory diagnostic skills which help in the confirmation of diagnosis.

4. To train them for preventive measures at individual and community levels against communicable skin diseases including sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy.

5. To develop a compassionate attitude towards the patients and their attendants.

Skills

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

1. History taking in dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy.

2. Clinical examination and description of cutaneous findings in a systematic way in dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy.

3. To have a broad idea and approach to manage common skin diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy.

4. Systematic examination in relation to dermatologic diseases.

5. To develop skills to do day-to- day common laboratory tests and their interpretation which help in the diagnosis.

COURSE CONTENT:

During the training the students have a comprehensive teaching in dermatology sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy in 16-week training period.

Unit 1. General introduction                       2 hr

Recognition of Primary and Secondary Skin Lesions  - Morphological characteristics and significance.   1 hr

Diagnosis and Treatment of Skin Diseases  -  Principle, Pattern, and Methods.   1.0 hr

Unit 2.Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and urticaria

Atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 1 hr

Urticaria –Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 0.5 hr

Dermatological Emergencies ( Anaphylactic Shock ).  0.5 hr

Unit 3. Psoriasis, Lichen planus, and Pityriasis rosea

Psoriasis, Lichen planus and Pityriasis rosea – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 2 hr

Unit 4. Drug eruptions, Erythema multiforme, and TEN

Drug eruptions, erythema multiforme, Steven’s Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 2 hr

Unit 5. Dermatomyositis, Scleroderma, SCLE and DLE

DermatomyositisSclerodrema– Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 1.5 hr

Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, Discoid lupus erythematosus - Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 0.5 hr

Unit 6. Pemphigus, Pemphigoid, and Dermatitis herpetiformis

Pemphigus, Pemphigoid,Dermatitis herpetiformis – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment.  2 hr

Unit 7.  Viral infections, and Fungal infections

Viral infections ( Verruca vulgaris, Verruca plana, Molluscum contagiosum,Herpes simplex, and Herpes zoster )- Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 1 hr

Unit 8. Sexually transmitted diseases (1)

Syphilis – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 1hr

Gonococcal and Non-gonococcal infections – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 0.5 hr

Cutaneous manifestations of HIV infection and management.  0.5 hr.

Unit 9. Sexually transmitted diseases (2)

Chancroid, LGV, Donovanosis, Herpes progenitalisHPV – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and treatment.  1 hr

Syndromic approach to the diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted diseases. 1 hr  

Unit 10. Leprosy, Tuberculosis, and Leishmaniasis

Leprosy - Pathogenesis, Classification and clinical features of leprosy, Reactions in leprosy, and Diagnosis, treatment and control of leprosy. 1 hr

Tuberculosis and Leishmaniasis - Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 1 hr

Unit 11. Infestations, Impetigo, and Pyoderma

Infestations:Scabies and pediculosis (crab louse, and head louse )– Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 0.5 hr

Impetigo- Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 0.5 hr

Pyoderma - Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 1 hr

Unit 12. Acne, Disorders of pigmentation, and Skin cancer

Acne - Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment.  0.5 hr

Disorders of pigmentation (Vitiligo, Chloasma / Melasma)- Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment  0.5 hr

Skin cancer - Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment. 1 hr

Unit 13. Self-study: Hereditary disorders

Hereditary disorders: Ichthyosis, Albimism, Epidermolysis bullosa, Melanocytic

naevi, Freckles and other naevi – Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment.

The clinical posting content is designed to complement the lectures. The content of the practicals on the following schedule may be altered according to the condition available clinically.

Additional remarks

The cases with diseases like acne vulgaris, scabies, pyoderma, pediculosis, fungal infection of skin, alopecias, sexually transmitted diseases, autoimmune diseases, bullous disorders, papulosquamous disease etc. are demonstrated and discussed during the training period.

STRUCTURE:

The course comprises 24 hr of lectures and 16 hr of practicals.

One lecture session of 4-hr, will be held on Wednesday.

One 4-hr noviciate session will be held on Tuesday.

The final examination (2 hr) will contain multiple-choice, short-answer questions and case analysis.

ORGANIZATION:

Each lecture will be offered to the entire class.  An assistant will act as liaison between students and teachers, and will be responsible for taking attendance, collecting exam papers, and related matters.

EVALUATION:

1. Clinical Assessment: The students go through an assessment at the end of their clinical postings (40%).

2. Theory Examination: Separate sheet examination having the dermatology questions, for the evaluation of theoretical knowledge of candidates in dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy (50%).

3Quiz before lectures: The students will be assessed whether they are familiar with the content to be presented just before each lecture. (10%)
