The Second Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU) has always maintained an open attitude, actively participating in the global education of medical talents and making continuous efforts in building a world-class training destination for overseas physicians.
In recent years, SAHZU has gradually shifted its focus to foster a new model of global medical education collaboration. The continuous 16-year partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) serves as a significant example.
This collaboration between SAHZU and UCLA was launched in 2009. Three years later, the two parties jointly established the Joint Training Center for Fellows, expanding the scope of cooperation from clinical diagnosis and treatment to the education of medical talents. By 2017, the collaboration had deepened further, initiating the joint training of high-level talents such as postdoctoral fellows and M. D. candidates.
The hospital provides a tailored training curriculum for each international trainee. Training durations range from a few weeks to one year, and the focus of the training can be general or focused on specialized learning of specific techniques.
This flexible and precise training model has attracted early-career physicians worldwide. Dr. Wiesner, a former UCLA Cardiology fellow and now associate professor, traveled to SAHZU twice within the same year to study coronary intervention techniques. After completing the training and returning to the United States, he commented that the skills he acquired at SAHZU helped him successfully pass the rigorous assessment at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.
The residency training programs in Anesthesiology, Neurosurgery, and General Surgery at SAHZU are also recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as equivalent to that in the United States, signifying that its training quality has fully met international standards.
The hospital has been expanding its global collaboration network, such as becoming the first partner in China mainland of the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, the first national Belt and Road Overseas Anesthesiologist Training Base designated by the Chinese Medical Association, and jointly establishing the International Colorectal Surgery Training Academy with the Colorectal Cancer Committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association…
A diverse and multi-dimensional international medical education system was gradually constructed at SAHZU.
Dr. Jannik, a German ophthalmologist from Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, spoke highly of the efficient diagnosis and treatment processes at SAHZU. The high-complexity surgical cases, as well as the exquisite skills and composed professional demeanor of the doctors in the SAHZU Eye Center, left a deep impression on him. Upon returning home after his training, he plans to share the Chinese experience with his German colleagues. Young Italian surgeon Dr. Cricri, who completed a 3-month training program in the Colorectal Surgery Department in 2023, returned for further training two years later, exclaiming that the surgical techniques of Chinese surgeons are truly admirable.
To date, SAHZU has attracted nearly 500 international doctors, medical students, and nursing students from over 70 overseas medical schools across 45 countries and regions spanning six continents for advanced studies and training. These trainee physicians take the SAHZU Experience back to their own countries, further benefiting patients worldwide.
