Strengthening China–Arab Collaboration in Global Health

To implement the health cooperation priorities under the “Eight Major Cooperation Initiatives” for practical China–Arab cooperation proposed at the First China–Arab States Summit, the China–Arab States Science and Technology Cooperation Center for Public Health (hereinafter referred to as the “Center”) was officially launched in July 2025 at the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU).

Supported by Zhejiang University and led by FAHZU, the Center is China’s only national public health science and technology cooperation platform jointly established with Arab states. It aims to build a comprehensive cooperation framework encompassing basic research, talent development, and clinical services for Arab countries, thereby strengthening bilateral capacity in medical research and innovation, health workforce development, and disease prevention and control.

Leveraging the clinical and research strengths of Zhejiang University and FAHZU, the Center systematically advances multidimensional healthcare cooperation with Arab partners. In talent development, it has established partnerships with universities, research institutes, and medical institutions across Arab countries, attracting medical professionals and healthcare administrators to China for training and exchange. Through structured and needs-oriented programs, the Center promotes joint talent cultivation, technical exchange, and mutual learning in healthcare management.

In clinical practice, the Center focuses on major diseases of shared concern to China and Arab countries. Specialized demonstration teams have been formed to address complex and critical cases, delivering personalized and internationally oriented medical services and developing a regionally influential platform for advanced clinical care. In research and innovation, the Center integrates the strengths of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration across medicine, engineering, and information science, to conduct joint research addressing priority health challenges and to facilitate the translation and application of research outcomes.

At present, the Center has established a healthcare cooperation network covering the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Jordan, Algeria, and other countries. Looking ahead, the Center will use the “3-1-3 Initiative” as a key implementation framework to further deepen results-oriented cooperation, build a practical model for international collaboration in health system capacity building, and contribute sustained momentum to the development of a China–Arab community with a shared future in the new era.
