This Program is an intensive summer research training experience designed for junior/senior undergraduate students who are preparing for careers in medical research or engineering. The goal of the program is to expose students to challenges, excitement, and satisfaction of research. Under this program, students spend ten weeks (July-September), pursuing individual research projects in the laboratories of UCLA faculty members. Students gain experience in using modern research techniques, designing and executing experimental strategies, and collaborating with other researchers. In addition, students attend weekly program meetings that introduce them to cutting-edge technologies, interdisciplinary research, and graduate education system. Students visit UCLA medical and engineering facilities to learn more about current practical application of novel technologies. At the end of the program, all students formally present their research progress to UCLA faculty members. Admission to this program is competitively selected based on students' academic excellence, past research experience, and English comprehension. Each Student is matched to individual UCLA faculty member whose expertise and interests match those of the student's education background. Faculty members serve as advisors and assist the students in developing and completing a research action plan. 22 undergraduate students from Zhejiang University , School of medicine and School of Engineering , participated in the 2006 ZJU-UCLA summer research program.
