Mentor: Dr. Yong Chen Department: Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Title of research project: Setting-up & Improvement of FCS System and its further application Lab website Address: http://www.cnsi.ucla.edu/faculty/chen_y.htmXiang Hao is a fourth year undergraduate Optical Engineering Major. Now he is doing research on FCS System. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) was first introduced by Madge, Elson and Webb in 1972, as one of the many different modes of high-resolution spatial and temporal analysis of extremely low concentrated biomolecules. In contrast to other fluorescence techniques, the parameter of primary interest is not the emission intensity itself, but rather spontaneous intensity fluctuations caused by the minute deviations of the small system from thermal equilibrium. All of them are very important and essential in the biochemical research, biophysics and chemistry.
Now the FCS Systems are widely used in bio-analysis., but its system is not so satisfied in many places. The purpose of the first step of this project is trying to redesigning and setting up a new FCS System and let it fit the requirement of the experiment, but with less weight and volume, spending less money, and easy to take apart and re-set up if it doesn’t work in the future. Based on these, our group will use it to do some further research which belongs to the second step. Xiang Hao’ s work now is just focusing on the first step. The work of him both contain designing of the software, and the hardware. For the software, it should do all the mathematics analysis; and the hardware, its function is detect the intensity of the fluorescence. Mr. Xiang Hao plan to finish the code of the software in 4 weeks, now the work has been completed. Three parts of the hardware(the optical table, power supply and detector module) also have been finished by Sep. 12. When he come back to Zhejiang University, he will still keep in touch with this project and try to change the Process-Oriented to Object-Oriented one.
Xiang Hao love the environment of lab in UCLA and he regard here as a brilliant place for his further research life. He always said:” I come, I see, so I should conquer something here.”
